Defekty tvrdých zubních tkání jako následky orální hygieny v 16.-19. století

U čtyř členů dynastie Sweerts-Sporck z Kuksu, žijících v rozmezí 16.-19. století, bylynalezeny defekty tvrdých zubních tkání v podobě abrazí vestibulárních ploch kořenů a korunek. Makroskopický i mikroskopický vzhled defektů, jejich distribuce v rámci zubních oblouků, stejně jako charakter resorpce alveolárních výběžků svědčí o jejich původu v provádění orální hygieny. Tvar profilu nalezených defektů v průběhu uvedeného období představuje podporu názorů, dávajících výskyt klínovitých defektů do souvislosti s používáním zubního kartáčku.

Oral Hygiene Induced Lesions of Dental Hard Tissues in the Time-span between 16th and 19th Centuries

Within the framework of anthropological and medical research of skeletalremains of the Sweerts-Sporck noble family, preserved dentitions of five individuals were examined. A detailed investigation of the teeth revealed the lesions of dental hard tissues atfour individuals. Dish-shaped lesions profiles were observed at three individuals that have livedin the time-span between 16 th and 18 th centuries. In the fourth individual, who had lived in 19th century, only wedge-shaped lesions profile was found. Based on macro- and microscopic features of lesions, we suppose that they were formed due to practiced oral hygiene. There is no evidence of lesions with wedge-shaped profile in the period before the first toothbrush has been invented. Our finding fully corresponds to this fact and supports the theory that improper toothbrush use is responsible for the origin of this abrasion pattern.
