Treatment of a Mentally Ill Patient under the Support of Implants

J. Holakovský, T. Dostálová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2005; 105(2): 23-25

The authors deal with the program of a complex treatment of mentally retarded or other handicapped patients. In view of the fact that clinical examination of the teeth in these individuals is often difficult to perform as well as to make quality X-ray pictures, a more radical way of examination is to be accepted. Since the collaboration of such patients with the dentist is often deteriorated, it is often useful to invite an anesthesiologist for participation.

Radiation Dose of X-ray and CT Examination in Stomatology

P. Černochová, P. Krupa

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2005; 105(2): 26-29

The patient subjected to X-ray or CT examination is exposed to ionizing radiation. The dose can be measured and calculated by means of various dosimetric units. The effective dose makes it possible to compare radiation load in patients under the use of various imaging methods. The authors present the size of effective dose for CT examination of jaws on spiral CT scanner Marconi Mx8000. The authors also show that there is a possibility to set the values of the examination protocol so as to make the effective dose lower than for the panoramic X-ray picture of the jaws and simultaneously keep sufficient quality of the imaging.

E. Lenčová, A. Kalabisová, M. Ságová, Z. Broukal, S. Sulková, J. Dušková

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2005; 105(2): 43-45

The aim of the study was to assess oral health of haemodialysed patients with chronic renal failure. The authors examined 64 patients (mean age 63.5 years). DMFT, CPITN and dental treatment need were determined. The obtained data were compared to those of a survey on oral health status of elderly people in the Czech Republic, 2002 [1].In the examined group, 74.9 % of patients had their own teeth, 54.5 % required dental treatment. Mean DT amounted to 2.26 per person, MT 15.65 and FT 7.97. CPITN could be assessed in 60 % of persons, in 64.82 % of sextants CPI score 1 to 3 was found. In dialyzed patients, significantly higher prevalence of edentulousness,...

On Psychotherapy of Non-collaborative Children

K. Nováková, P. Němečková, Z. Kolařík, S. Richterová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2005; 105(2): 46-51

In a longitudinal study the authors follow the possibilities of positively influencing the behavior in 258 non-collaborative children in a dental office. The efficiency in the scale of psychotherapeutic procedures and methods is evaluated, in cases of failure premedication is administered and if necessary the treatment is performed in general anesthesia in relation to age and intellectual level. Psychotherapy was successfully applied during the entry examination of the admitted patients in almost a half of the cohort (43.4%), one third of the cohort was treated in general anesthesia. No problem behavior was encountered in 55.5% of the whole cohort...

Tooth Ankylosis

P. Černochová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2005; 105(2): 52-56

Tooth ankylosis is a localized fusion of alveolar bone and cement of the tooth root. It occurs most frequently in temporary teeth, where it affected the mandibular molar teeth than the superior ones. Biological mechanisms and etiological factors participating in the origin have not been fully uncovered. The tooth ankylosis originates during or after eruption of teeth. It is considered as a progressive abnormality in teeth eruption, since other teeth are already in the state of continual eruption. The ankylosed tooth is firmly maintained in the bone and enters infraocclusion, which may unfavorably influence the neighboring teeth and the occlusion plane....

Frequency and Severity of Facial Injuries in Cyclists A Comparative Study from the Years 1980-1982 and 2000-2002

J. Šimek, J. Pazdera, P. Tvrdý

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2005; 105(2): 57-60

The authors analyze medical documentation of patients, hospitalized and treated at the Clinical of Oral, Jaw and Facial Surgery, Faculty Hospital and Medical Faculty of Palacky University in Olomouc in the years 1980-1982 and 2000-2002. In the three-year period at the beginning of 80ties, 32 injured cyclists were treated at the clinic and twenty years later there were 112 patients, i.e. 3.5-fold more. Most injuries occurred during summer months, on weekends and in the evenings. The mean age of the injured persons increased over the twenty years from 33.3 years to 37.3 years. The severity of the facial injuries increased as well. In addition to injuries...

Therapy of Radiation Caries

J. Badalová, Z. Bezrouková

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2005; 105(2): 30-33

The treatment of patients with radiation caries requires a thorough collaboration between the physician and the patient. In addition to preventive measures, a key role is played by correct selection of the filling material. Present studies recommend, and our experience confirms, the anti-caries effects of materials which permanently release fluorine ions, divided into four categories by Christensen.1. classical glass-polyalkenoate cements,2. resin-modified glass-polyalkenoate cements,3. glass-polyalkenoate cements of high strength (condensed),4. copolymers.
