Introduction: The incidence of head and neck cancer in Czech Republic is rising. Despite the recent advances in treatment which improve the quality of life of these patients, no significant drop in fatality of the disease has been noted in the last decades. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe the clinical and demographic characteristics and analyze the survival of a series of patients treated at the Department of Dentistry, Charles University Faculty of Medicine and University Teaching Hospital in Hradec Králové for oral squamous cell carcinoma in the period 1988-2008 and to compare the results to those of similar studies published...

L. Comba, P. Bradna, M. Dudek, V. Fialová, J. Dušková, D. Houšová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2012; 112(2): 36-46 | DOI: 10.51479/cspzl.2012.007

Introduction: Composite restorations undergo degradation in the oral cavity, which may compromise their aesthetic and functional properties, cause failure of marginal integrity, increased abrasion or even partial fracture of the filling. Instead of complete removal of such restorations, they can be repaired. Aim: To study the bond strength of a new composite resin to an aged composite substrate after a 4-month storage in distilled water or sodium laurylsulphate solution (SLS). Two various surface treatments and two different adhesive systems were tested. Materials and methods: Light cured specimens of a micro-hybrid composite...

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2012; 112(2): 47-56 | DOI: 10.51479/cspzl.2012.008

Introduction: Macleaya cordata (Willd.) contains quaternary benzo[c]phenantridine alkaloids sanguinarine and chelerythrine. The alkaloid extract of M. cordata (MCE) is known for its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory activities and thus is used as an active component in dental care products. Aim of work: The study examined the effects of MCE on lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in human gingival fibroblasts. Material and Methods: The effect of MCE (0.01-10 µg/ml) on human gingival fibroblasts viability was evaluated using neutral red incorporation in the cells. Non-toxic concentrations...

Miniimplant Supported Full Dentures. Two-years Study.

P. Barták, R. Šmucler

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2012; 112(2): 57-63 | DOI: 10.51479/cspzl.2012.009

Aim of study: The authors of this paper studied possibility of increase of total removable dentures retention using intraosseous implants of small diameter (hereinafter mini dental implants). The study conducted by four dentists under the same conditions (due to reduction of interpersonal differences) investigated survival of immediately functioning implants for two years. Results: From June 2003 to January 2010, four dentists treated 80 patients with total removable denture fixed by mini dental implants; all these patients met study criteria. This was a group of patients in which many of them were medically compromised (patients...

Alveolar Bone Formation by Orthodontic Movement

M. Šedivec, T. Dostálová, P. Hofmanová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2012; 112(2): 33-39 | DOI: 10.51479/cspzl.2012.031

Objectives: The ability to move tooth trough alveolar bone is one of the basic principles in orthodontics. Mechanical force generated by orthodontic appliance is transferred to periodontal ligament resulting in the remodeling of alveolar bone. Tooth movement is enabled by apposition and resorption of bone tissue. Process of bone remodeling can be used in order to create new bone in certain clinical situations. Early loss or agenesis of tooth is followed by the atrophy of alveolar ridge. Bone formation and implant site development by tooth movement is an interesting alternative to surgical bone augmentation techniques. Number of studies prove...
