Some Frequent Mistakes during Preparation of Orthopantograms

L. Steklý

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2002; 102(6): 183-190

X-ray examination is an integral part of the comprehensive examination of the patient. Orthopantograms serve the overall evaluation of the state of teeth and the skeleton in the orofacial area. The majority of mistakes on orthopantograms arises when setting the patient's head. The mistakes are above all due to the incorrect position of the head in relationto the imaging plane, incorrect inclination of the head in relation to the plane of the Frankfurt horizontal and lack of adherence to instructions on the part of the patient. The exposure values must be always adjusted according to instructions of the manufacturer. Repeated exposure leadsto unnecessary...

Historic Review of Treatment of Dentin Hypersensitivity

Z. Zapletalová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2002; 102(6): 191-198

The history of treatment of dentin hypersensitivity described as sensitiveness of uncovered dentin to external stimuli is long and reach. Initial treatment of toothache was empiric and based on magical and religious habits. Rational methods in the treatment of sensitive dentin could be developed only after the understanding of dentin morfology and physiology of dentinal pain in the 19th century. The work summarizes the most frequently used methods in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity refered in stomatological literature during the last 150 years. The list of authors that significantly contributed to the development of knowledge in the field...

Possibilities of Using Laser Radiation for Bleaching Teeth - Review

T. Dostálová, P. Koranda, H. Jelínková, D. Houšová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2002; 102(6): 199-206

New therapeutic method "laser-assisted bleaching" is evaluated in the study. Low temperature rise and quick application are advantages of process. Till this time several different lasers was used sooner for this purpose: argon, Nd:YAG, CO2, and diode laser.

Principles of Oral Hygiene in Patients with Fixed Prostheses

D. Coufalová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2002; 102(6): 207-209

The author describes the importance of hygiene of fixed bridges, emphasizes correct procedures and mentions basic aids for correct care of hygiene of fixed prostheses.

Palliative Therapy of Cervical Metastases Using Laser-induced Hyperthermia

R. Šmucler, J. Mazánek

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2002; 102(6): 217-223

The authors evaluated in the presented work the possible application of interstitiallaser hyperthermia in palliation of metastases of head and neck tumours into the cervical lymph nodes. They used the variant of this therapy with application of a diode - 980nm laserfibre through an injection needle without imaging technique. Based on the assembled clinical experience they reached the following conclusions: a) interstitial laser hyperthermia is probably a very safe alternative therapeutic method which ensures significant diminution of the tumour mass in the area of the cervical nodes, b) with regard to the minimal burdening of the patient this procedure...

Remodelling of Fractures of the Mandibular Articular Process

P. Křížek

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2002; 102(6): 224-228

The investigated group comprises data of 43 patients who were examined between Jan.1, 1996 and Dec. 31, 2000 treated and systematically followed up at the authors clinic on account of unilateral or bilateral fractures of the mandibular articular process. The authors assembled complete X-ray documentation and made check-up X-ray examinations corresponding to those made at the time of the injury. The basic demand was to visualize the fracture in two projections normal to each other. Special attention was focused on the rate and quality of remodelling processes. Fractures were classified according to the classification suggested by Lund in 1974, as due...

Oral Health in Schoolchildren in the District of Frýdek-Místek in 1997 and 1999, III. part. Excretion of Fluoride by Urine

Z. Broukal, L. Ryšavá, O. Zajíček, J. Dušková, L. Mrklas

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2002; 102(6): 229-232

Urine fluoride excretion was evaluated in a group of children aged 12-14 years in the frame of the iodine and fluoride intake promoting intervention in the district of Frýdek-Místek in years 1997-1999. The average level of urinary excretion of fluoride amountedin the onset of study to 0.574 mg/l and decreased significantly by the year 1999 to 0.201mg/l. The decrease of urinary fluoride content is explained either by the increased fluorideclearance from previously saturated skeleton (due to the water fluoridation history of the district) in the onset of study and/or by the insufficient availability of alimentary fluorides (especially fluoridated salt)...

Distribution of the Mastication Force in the Bone Bed of Inclined Dental Implants in Relation to the Inclination, Type of the Surface and Level of the Alveolar Bone nearthe Cervix

L. Himmlová, S. Konvičková, A. Kácovský, T. Goldmann

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2002; 102(6): 233-245

Forces acting on the dental enosseal implant after loading by chewing lead toadaptation of his bone bed. Transmission of these forces depends on the characteristics of the used implant. At present mathematical modelling is the preferential method for the stressanalysis. Stress computations were made by the finite-element method using a simplified 3D model of implant of common size inserted into the model of the bone at various angles to the vertical line in mesial and distal directions with bioinert and bioactive surfaces and with threevariations of bone level around the implant neck. Chewing was simulated by forces of 17.1 N,114.6 N and 23.4 N, in...

Conformal Radiotherapy of Head and Neck Tumours

J. Kovařík

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2002; 102(6): 246-251

Nine patients with loco-regionally advanced head and neck tumours were treated between October 2001 and March 2002 at the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology, University Hospital Královské Vinohrady. All patients were irradiated using the 3-D conformal radiotherapy technique. The minimal total dose was 70 Gy. Amiphostine at a dose of 500 mg i.v. per fraction was administered concomitantly. Complete response was recorded in all patients with acceptable acute toxicity. Acute mucosal reaction was minimal in 4 patients and moderate in 3 others. Severe acute reaction due to mycotic infection was recorded only in 2 patients. Because of the short follow-up,...
