Z. Broukal, O. Krejsa, L. Mrklas, E. Lenčová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2006; 106(1): 3-8

Nation-wide survey of oral health of seniors aged 65-74 and 75 and more years showed the significantly higher prevalence of edentulousness and the lower mean count of remaining teeth in institutionalised seniors when compared with those living independently (age 65-74 - 50.1 % vs. 21.0 %, 4.16 % vs. 10.91 %, age 75 and more - 65.2 % vs. 51.7 %, 2.24 % vs. 5.06 %). Significantly lower count of institutionalised individuals had enough teeth present to evaluate their periodontal status but the prevalence of periodontal disease did not differ significantly between the groups of institutionalised and independently living seniors. Restoration of remaining...

Posttraumatic Resorption of Permanent Teeth

H. Hecová, P. Fiala, P. Vais, V. Merglová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2006; 106(1): 3-8

The root resorption belongs to the most severe consequence after the injury. The aim of our study was to analyze a group of 510 teeth with different types of dental injuries. In the group of our patients we found 39 teeth with external resorption and 10 teeth with internal resorption process. Eleven teeth had to be extracted after establishing advanced resorption of the root.

Dental Caries from Osteological Material from Znojmo-Hradiště

I. Jarošová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2006; 106(1): 9-16

The aim of this paper is to observe the caries development in humans from Znojmo-Hradiště. This investigation was performed on the osteological material (in possession of the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Science, Masaryk University Brno), in deliberately selected probes, having fulfilled the following requirements: 1. According to the time period - the skulls came from of archaeologically determinable time period. 2. According to the sex - the skulls were divided into males and females. 3. According to the age - only group of adults and mature individuals were selected. 4. According to the dental type. The aim of this paper is to find out...

Arthralgia of the Temporomandibular Joint (Case report)

H. Fikáčková, T. Dostálová, R. Vošická, V. Peterová, L. Navrátil, J. Lesák

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2006; 106(1): 9-15

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) is a collective term for dysfunctions associated with the temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscles. In the therapy of TMD the complex conservative treatment facilitates natural regeneration capabilities of the organism is prefered to irreversible therapy based on ideal biomechanics of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).This report describes the complex treatment of TMJ arthralgia by low level laser therapy (GaAlAs diode laser, energy of density 15 J/cm2), physiotherapy, stabilization splint and prosthetic treatment. Treatment results were objectively confirmed by infrared thermography and...

Non-collaborating Patient in the Child Dental Care

L. Pantuček

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2006; 106(1): 16-22

The review presents a survey on s.c. non-collaborating patients, the reasons come to our clinic, why they become non-collaborating and describes the way to treat them. The paper presents a survey of presently available therapeutic method and possibilities of their use.

Application of Restriction Analysis of the Gene for 16S rRNA for Verification of Species Identity of Important Oral Microorganisms II. Periodontal Microorganisms

G. Novotná, J. Janata, J. Dušková, T. Janatová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2006; 106(1): 17-21

The authors recommend a simple algorithm for the restriction-endonuclease analysis of genetic material of microorganisms present on mucous membrane of oral cavity. The method provides a significantly more precise species identification of bacteria associated with diseases of periodontium. The method is based on analysis of the part of the gene for 16S rRNA and its use is therefore universal and may be combined with identification of other clinically important organisms of oral cavity, e.g. viridans streptococci. The requirements of the method for equipment and cost are not high, as it uses a limited number of restriction enzymes. Although the method...

Application of Laryngeal Mask for Securing Respiratory Pathways in Patient with Circumjaw Inflammation

R. Foltán, J. Macháč, F. Donev, J. Hoffmannová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2006; 106(1): 22-26

The authors retrospectively studied the advantages, disadvantages, risk and complications in the application of laryngeal mask (LM) to secure respiratory pathways in patients with circummaxillary/circummandibular inflammation. The authors followed 23 patients at the age 19-68 years from the point of view of age of the patients, sex, size of contracture of masticatory muscles before and after diseases. LM was introduced without the application of laryngoscope and failures, i.e. repeated intubations, the use of laryngoscope, necessary endotracheal intubation, symptoms of stomach distension, regurgitation of stomach content, aspiration of stomach content...

Effect of Approximal Tooth Surface Morphology on the Formation of Overhang Filling of 2nd Class

P. Bednář, S. Ságlová, D. Černý, P. Závodský, O. Zmátlová, P. Pršalová, M. Hadravová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2006; 106(1): 23-27

A relationship between approximal tooth surface morphology and creation of overhang filling is displayed. After drilling of approximal cavity, the gingival cavity margin was evaluated as concave or non-concave. After making the filling, on bite wing radiogram the filling quality was evaluated. The overall percentage of overhang filling in our study (up to 1mm of everhang material) was 6.36%, much less then could be found in literature (16-85% according the diagnostic method). There was not proven any statistical relationship between the risk of making overhang filling and approximal tooth morphology.

Proliferation Activity in Pleomorphic Adenoma: Possible Prediction of Relapses

A. Skálová, J. Walter, I. Stárek, M. Michal

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2006; 106(1): 27-32

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the commonest tumor of salivary glands. The tumor is benign, but the rate of tumor recurrences has been estimated up to 45% after simple enucleation and up to 5% after partial parotidectomy. There are no reliable histological criteria in PA indicating an increased risk of recurrence. We decided to evaluate the significance of cell proliferation in primary PA for development of recurrence. Cell proliferation was studied by means of immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibody MIB1 directed against cell cycle related antigen Ki-67. Salivary gland tumor registry yielded 670 PAs, and among these, 105 cases recurred. In...
