The author gives an account on experience with treatment of a narrow upperdental arch using elastic expansive devices firmly fixed by means of orthodontic rings to the dentition. Based on his findings, he reflects on suitable indications for the use of Quad helix and Bihelix with regard to long-term stability of the therapeutic results. He presents the findings and results of a study extending over several years.

Treatment of Dentin Hypersensitivity with the Preparation Seal and Protect

Z. Bezrouková, J. Badalová, K. Jansová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2001; 101(4): 117-122

The authors evaluated clinically the effect of preparation Seal and Protect of DeTrey Dentsply Co. on hypersensitive dentin. In 37 patients with 150 treated teeth they results demonstrated a marked decline of hypersensitivity within a time interval of 1 and 3 months. On a check-up examination after 1 month complaints receded in 137 teeth, 13 remained without effect or a relapse occurred within a short time. After 3 months improvement persisted in 108teeth, a relapse occurred in 42. A check-up after 6 months revealed restored sensitivity in 127teeth The material is a further alternative for clinical practice. More permanent improvementcan be achieved...

Apical Leakage of Thermafil and Lateral Compaction Techniques. Part II: Sealer Ketac Endo

A. Kašťáková, Z. Halačková

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2001; 101(4): 120-125

Thermafil, as a warm guttapercha technique, is supposed to overcome some disadvantages of cold lateral compaction. To compare whether it also offers a comparable apicalseal, was the question/aim of this study. Ketac Endo was applied both as a sealer and paste filling in this study. Extracted teeth were instrumented with K-files and a step-back technique, with master apical file size ISO 40. Filled teeth were immersed in 1% methylene blue for oneweek. The results showed similar results in all the groups: Thermafil (2.035 mm), lateralcompaction (2.225 mm) and Ketac Endo (2.365 mm). There was no statistically significant difference between any of the...

N. Markovská, M. Tamášová, Š. Vojakovičová, B. Čičelová, N. Bachárová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2001; 101(4): 123-131

In 1997-1999 authors performed epidemiologic survey of 5-6-year-old childrenin some districts of Slovak Republic. All informations were collected under standardized methods done by WHO. For determination of caries incidence they used DMFT or dmft index. Also they analysed state of treatment of permanent molars in group of 5-6-year-old children (n= 660). Separately in 5-year-old children (n = 289) state of deciduous molars and in 6-year-old children. The results show relatively high percentages of sound deciduous molars in 5-year old children from Bratislava. These children are treated systematically.

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2001; 101(4): 126-129

The authors inform about biological effects of lownergy therapeutic lasers (LILT) in an overview. They draw attention both to their indication and contraindication in medicine, and to the safety precautions and sanitary measures when using lasers of the groupIII a and III b.

Is Br nemark's Protocol the Last Word in Dental Implantology?

L. M. D. Cevallos, M. Čelko, A. Šimůnek

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2001; 101(4): 130-133

The tendency in dental implantology is to give faster treatment to the patient. Immediate loaded implantation was performed, but initial placement stabilization, special design of the implants and good quality of bone are important for success. This new tendency in implantology can be used only in specifics cases and with careful adherence to indications.

Bonded Amalgam Filling - Part II

Z. Mach, J. Regent, K. Hroníková, L. Mrklas

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2001; 101(4): 132-140

The work follows up in the previous article published in this journal (2/1999). The authors inform about clinical and laboratory evaluation of bonded and non-bonded amalgam restorations up to six years of clinical service. 75 bonded and 62 non-bonded amalgam restorations and 11 seals were evaluated using modified USPHS criteria. In-vitro evaluation has compared marginal steps to a standard set of Simulated restorations, and calculated the Index of Marginal Fracture. Statistical analysis of clinical and laboratory results showed nosignificant differences between both techniques.

Talon Cusp - a Developmental Anomaly of the Tooth Shape

D. Beluš, J. Kaliariková, J. Martiňuk

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2001; 101(4): 134-139

The authors describe a developmental anomaly of tooth shape, talon cusp. In the course of 1985-1999 they diagnosed this anomaly in 9 patients on 10 teeth. In the investigatedgroup of 7 girls and 2 boys the mentioned anomaly was found in the upper lateral incisors of the permanent teeth and only in one case in the permanent middle incisor. In seven instances the affected tooth had an altered position in the dental arch. In two patients the talon cuspinjured the tongue and in one instance in the fissure surrounding the cusp caries developed. As to treatment, the authors used repeatedly therapeutic smoothing after 3-month intervals with subsequent impregnation...

Inaccuracies of the Cervical Closure of Crowns in Relation to the Way of Modelling and the Material Used

M. Řezáč

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2001; 101(4): 141-145

The author returns to the subject on which he lectured in 1999. It concerns the relationship of the selected method of modelling, the material used to create the preliminaryshape of a future crown and accuracy of that shape in the cervical region. The investigation was conceived as a preliminary study which can be followed by further technological steps.
