One of the most conservative treatment methods to correct or improve the color of teeth is bleaching. This study describes the preclinical experience with laser-activated bleaching agent for treatment discolored teeth. The study is comparing three laser systems, halogen-light unit and chemical action agents to check the time and quality of bleaching process. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of various laser techniques for bleaching teethin office vital whitening. The method of chemical oxidation results in a 2-3 shade change in onetreatment. The halogen-light units, Alexandrite laser (750 nm), and Er:YAG received the same effect and...

Durability of Veneer Crowns - Two Years Long Clinical Study

H. Hubálková, T. Dostálová, J. Charvát, M. Bartoňová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2003; 103(6): 176-183

Veneer crowns have represented a standard way of treatment in fixed prosthetics for several decades. Veneer materials' properties significantly influence the stability of the crown. The aim of this study was to evaluate possible changes of occlusal surfaces, quality of the crown margin, stability of the veneer shape and colour and the gingival status. A group of 102 metal crowns with both ceramic and plastic veneers was evaluated. The initial state of the crowns and changes after the two years of use were compared. The authors have used the UnitedStates Public Health Service System criteria, the results were processed statistically. After two years...

Fluoride Tablets - their Indications and Limitations

I. Lekešová, J. Handzel

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2003; 103(6): 184-189

In the Czech Republic the fluoride tablet supplements were introduced as earlyas in the 1968. They were used on a nation-wide basis, in those regions where drinking water fluoridation had not been implemented. In the 1990s the preventive program based on fluoridetablets was stopped. Regarding the current situation, this preventive measure is again being recommended by professional organizations of both pediatricians and pediatric dentists, but under adjusted dosage pattern. The aim of this paper is to present the latest information on fluoride tablet supplements and the dosage pattern and indications thereof. This article presents the dosage schemethat...

MTA - New Root Canal Filling Material

V. Merglová, A. Šváchová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2003; 103(6): 190-194

MTA (mineral trioxide aggregate) is currently considered to be the most suitable root canal filling material, capable to create a hermetic barrier between the tooth and the surrounding tissues. MTA is being recommended particularly for the technique of direct pulpcapping in the event of injury, in case of vital dental pulp amputation, for the one-visit apexification procedure, for the retrograde root canal filling, in case of root fractures and inendodontic treatment of root canal perforations caused during treatment or due to the resorption process.

Results of Temporo-mandibular Arthropaties Relaxation Therapy

M. Kotráň, E. Paško, J. Sakmár

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2003; 103(6): 215-223

The authors analyzed a group of 232 patients, to whom a relaxation therapy of temporo-mandibular joint and adjacent structures with a resin bite splint had been indicated. The authors prefer mandibular bite splint raising the bite by 4 to 6 mm or more. The results confirmed the positive influence of such a therapy on temporo-mandibular arthropaties. A pronounced improvement was observed in 96 patients (41.4%), a slight improvement in 120 patients (51.7%). No improvement was observed in 15 patients (6.5%), and only in one case(0.4%) a clinical aggravation was observed. It is suggested to combine a bite splint therapy with a physical and pharmacological...

Maxillofacial Trauma in Children

M. Janíčková, D. Statelová, W. Stiffel

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2003; 103(6): 224-228

The author presents a group of children with maxillofacial trauma, treated at the Clinic of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of a Jessenius Medical Faculty, Comenius University and a Faculty Hospital in Martin (JLF UK and MFN) during a period of five years. They concentrate on a specific anatomical composition of a facial skeleton in children, psychical aspects, difficulties with examination and diagnostics. Based on the analysis of causes of traumain infants they refer to the possibilities to reduce the infant accident rate.

Internal Sinus Floor Elevation - New Dental Implantology Possibilities

Z. Nathanský

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2003; 103(6): 229-233

Dental implantology is a rapidly developing branch of dentistry and dentoalveolarsurgery. There are many new treatment methods currently appearing which can widen the indications of intraosseous implants, internal sinus floor elevation being one of them. This method makes it possible to augment the volume of a lost maxillary alveolar bone in the area of a maxillary sinus, thus enabling dental implants to be inserted. We have used this methodin 22 patients, in whom we have inserted 48 implants with very good results. The complicationsduring the healing phase due to the wound infection were observed only in one patient. These experiences persuade us...

Adhesive Agents in Dentistry - 1st Part (Synopsis)

T. Bartoň, D. Houšová, L. Himmlová

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2003; 103(6): 234-239

This paper summarizes the current knowledge in the area of dental adhesives. Dental adhesive agents are used as agents bonding dental materials to hard dental tissues. The paper describes the bonding mechanism to the hard dental tissues (micro-mechanical retention) and the factors influencing thereof. The paper discusses the role of different anatomical structure and chemical composition of dental enamel and dentin. In dental enamel, the authors highlight the role of a preparation technique (rotation or oscillatory technique) and the prepared surface conditioning (conventional etching, air abrasion, laser etch) and the adhesive mechanism thereof. In...

Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Dentistry

H. Hubálková, K. Hora, Z. Seidl, J. Krásenský

Čes. stomatol. Prakt. zub. lék. (Czech Dental Journal) 2003; 103(6): 240-247

The authors emphasize the growing importance of magnetic resonance as anexamination method in dental patients. The results of magnetic resonance imaging can beinfluenced by various metal objects in orofacial area. When considering the use of thisexamination method in patients, it is necessary to evaluate the composition and properties of metal objects present in the human body.
